Bishop Bike Adventure Day 31 July 31, 2010

Today we banged out another 90+ mile day, thanks to the flat terrain as well as our desire for good accommodations. The wind was not quite as friendly today as it was yesterday. Regarding the accommodations, we ended up at a nice campground--nice but not exactly what we were hoping for. The major cities are few and far between and motel accommodations in these parts seem even lighter than in Eastern Montana. Consequently, we had our fourth camping experience, this after two consecutive 90-mile days when a nice firm mattress would have hit the spot!

We found some very curious cows today, as the photo indicates. Despite numerous acres in the pasture, the cows bunched up against the barbed wire and checked us out on break. I think it must have been near their feeding time and they thought we were Farmer Bob! They provided us with great entertainment for several minutes.

We stopped in a small town en route to our destination early in our ride. The town’s population was estimated at 100, yet they had two bars. While we were visiting one and slamming down some Gatorade, three young men came in to stock up on beer. One was on a short leave from Iraq. Upon leaving, we heard the words, “we do a lot of drinking around here.” That left us a bit speechless and stuck with us for much of the day. We’ll be better prepared for a response next time.

We again traveled on a low traffic road with a great surface. Such conditions allow us to take in the scenery. While the services were few and far between, the beautiful farmland was not.

Lastly, most of our days end with a beautiful sunset. Here you see Debbie "bringing it home" as we prepare for another camping experience.

  1. Hey Tim and Deb, What a great pic of the cow clan. That was a hoot. Poor critters hanging around all day with nothing to do but try to find a little shade and munch grass. What they're hoping for is a little action, and you must have looked like you were going to provide it...Jim
