Bishop Bike Adventure Day 40 August 9, 2010

After a delayed start due to thunderstorm activity and overcast skies, we ventured out and crossed the Mississippi River at Muscatine, Iowa, entering Illinois, the Land of Lincoln. Our initial reactions to Illinois were mediocre at best, but it grew on us as the day progressed. We discovered a surprising number of early climbs on rolling hills, with plenty of attractive farmland soon facing us. We found that the people have not been as friendly as in other states and that the roads we used were often shoulderless.

We also found ourselves facing another uncharacteristic headwind as we pedaled east. The weather was very hot and humid, but it did lead to a wonderful sunset. Finishing the day after dark with 90 miles under our belt was therefore an accomplishment that satisfied us. With today’s mileage, we have now biked over 2,000 cumulative miles on a coast-to-coast adventure. 1. It was so good to see your smiling faces last night! I hope today's travel will be with the wind to your back and a nice wide shoulder to ride on. I wonder if you will hit Kankakee? I once knew a GI from there. He looked so pitifully young to be in the air force, but they were all young in WW 2. Trust you will have a great day. I love you both! Mom

  2. Welcome to my home state. I was born in Chicago as Deb hopefully will remember! Hope you find the natives more friendly as you travel along. And also hope you won't need to bike at night. Happy trails! Lots of love, Mom

  3. Ha ha ~ the Moms are anonymous and we have to guess which one is which!
May the wind be at your backs as you continue your "downhill" side of your adventure.

  4. Congrats on passing the 2000 mile mark and welcome to East of the Mississippi. The pictures look much the same for the past week with the farmlands. Are there any trees or forests? Enjoy your trip around the Great Lakes as you pedal on to New England. love, Kathy and Tom
