Bishop Bike Adventure Day 30 July 30, 2010

For much of our trip, we have been following Adventure Cycling maps. Today, however, we had to make a major detour. There is flooding at Devil’s Lake, a function of natural water table movement. This flooding caused Adventure Cycling to issue a map addendum rerouting bikers, but the rerouting also appeared inadequate. After making some inquiries at the motel, we decided to avoid the area altogether and make up our own route.

Our route was in no way disappointing as the scenery was great. We traveled through some areas that provided beautiful vistas of North Dakota’s farmland. As in Montana, we were able to see long-ranged views with a big sky. According to one local, the crops are doing great this year, as these photos attest. We neared the century mark with a long ride with the wind on flat terrain. The roads were also lightly traveled, further reducing the stress level on the biker.

Toward late afternoon, the sky began to look dark in the southwest. I thought for a time that we might be stormchasers via bicycle, but we were spared that excitement.

  1. Hey Tim and Deb, If you're on a bike, lightly traveled roads are what you call a good thing. The pics remain fantastic guys. We were struck this spring on our jaunt, just how amazing it is to be able to see what seems like forever. Nothing but the curvature of the earth. Some call that boring, but it was so different, that we just couldn't keep our heads from swiveling trying to take it all in...Good Traveling Jim

  2. Methinks Big Agnes is getting a long rest! Glad you are finding motels available - good planning. I so enjoy the pictures and the updates, hope you are on schedule. Maybe Debbie can get a substitute for a few days, if necessary, wouldn't that take a little of the pressure off? Just enjoy every minute of this adventure of a lifetime! Stay well! Much love, Mom

  4. Gary and I got back from a week at camp last night. I've thought about you so often, wondering where you are now! The pictures are wonderful - not anything like the scenery we have around here. I'm so glad that God is leading the way and that He has set His angels charge around you. Be safe and enjoy every minute of this wonderful adventure. Give each other a squeeze for me. With love and prayers, Chris
