We approached Lake Erie in the town of Huron and rode along part of the longest transcontinental highway in America, Route 6 pictured here. It was definitely not the greatest road to bike on as each town or city along Lake Erie made a bike lane…or did not make a bike lane through their town, making our weary eyes pay close attention to the pavement. Thankfully we had a “short” day of biking- just 50 miles today.
The wide range of poverty to affluence was reflected along the shores of Lake Erie. When we did glance to the side, we saw some mansions and a few miles later we would see run down homes or closed businesses.
Finding an “open air” bathroom that we were so accustomed to in rural settings proved to be a challenge in our new urban environment. One town, Vermilion actually had a beautiful “Comfort Station” along our route. A much needed break 15 miles into our ride today.
Our Adventure Cycling maps advised us to be prepared for city cycling as we approach Cleveland. We did find it difficult to check out all the sights along Lake Erie as we passed through Huron, Vermilion, Lorain and Lakewood, so by the end of the day, we were ready to call it a day! We arrived at motel on the west side of Cleveland. One block over, we ate dinner at an eclectic diner that served an array of home cooked items.
We thought you might enjoy seeing how repetitive motion and somewhat static positions on a bicycle for hours in the sun produces unique tan patterns. Check out Debbie’s elbows in this picture. And as you can see in the other picture, Tim will be wearing his biking helmet for months!
Love the tan lines...you guys look great. Tomorrow will be fifty days on the road, that is amazing. What an accomplishment!! Pray you continue to have a safe trip.
